Together with FincoEnergies, LEMAN is extending its decarbonisation collaboration beyond ocean freight and into road transport, through the Biofuel Swap.
From ocean freight to the road
Since 2017, FincoEnergies has been a pioneering leader in carbon insetting for the shipping industry, helping cargo owners and freight forwarders replace fossil fuels with sustainable biofuels. LEMAN has worked with FincoEnergies since 2024 to decarbonise ocean shipments through certified biofuel insetting, under their brand GoodShipping.
Now, that partnership is growing. With Biofuel Swap, LEMAN can offer customers the same verified CO₂e reduction model for road transport, closing a gap that many logistics providers face – how to cut emissions on the road without changing vehicles, routes, or day-to-day operations.
What Biofuel Swap means for LEMAN’s customers
Biofuel Swap is a book-and-claim solution built specifically for road freight. Instead of requiring physical access to HVO100 (Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil) at the point of transport, it lets LEMAN customers fund an equivalent volume of certified sustainable fuel entered into the road fuel network, while receiving verified, auditable proof of the resulting CO₂e reduction.
- No operational changes — no new vehicles, infrastructure, or route adjustments required.
- Verified impact — an independent auditor confirms the purchase, blending, and allocation of HVO100 volumes.
- Certified reporting — customers receive an audited certificate detailing the fuel volume, emissions factor, and CO₂e savings for ESG and Scope 3 reporting.
How the process works
- Volume assessment — LEMAN and FincoEnergies determine how many litres of HVO100 are needed to reach a customer’s CO₂e reduction target, along with cost and timeframe.
- Fuel swap execution — the purchased HVO100 volume is blended into the road diesel network, directly reducing the fossil fuel share used in transport.
- Independent verification — a third-party auditor checks the entire process, from fuel purchase to the correct allocation of the Proof of Sustainability.
- Certified reporting — the customer receives a verified certificate confirming the HVO100 volume used and the associated CO₂e reduction, including feedstock origin.
This is the same insetting logic LEMAN already applies at sea: rather than funding unrelated offset projects elsewhere, the reduction happens directly within the transport network, right where the emissions occur.
Why this partnership keeps growing
Global logistics still faces a significant emissions challenge, and road transport remains one of the largest contributors within many customers’ Scope 3 footprint. By extending its long-standing FincoEnergies partnership to cover road freight, LEMAN gives customers one consistent framework for verified decarbonisation across both ocean and road modalities.
