LEMAN commits to setting science-based targets with SBTi

LEMAN SBTi commitment

LEMAN responds to the urgent global call to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in line with the Paris Agreement. In April 2025, LEMAN’s commitment to set near-term and long-term emissions reduction targets aligned with the 1.5°C business ambition was accepted by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi).

This commitment means that, in the next two years, LEMAN must develop near- and long-term company-wide emission reduction targets and submit them for validation by SBTi, the gold standard for corporate emissions targets. The SBTi target-setting framework ensures corporate climate targets firmly align with the Paris Agreement goals to limit global warming to 1.5°C.

Why science-based targets are critical

Unlike many self-defined or arbitrary corporate climate targets, science-based targets are not concerned with achievable goals, “low-hanging fruit”, or marketable messaging. SBTi validates that corporate emissions reduction targets align in the latest climate science. The organisation ensures that the targeted emissions reductions are in line with the Paris Agreement and the global carbon budget.

What an SBTi commitment means to us at LEMAN

Committing to SBTi is a milestone for LEMAN for a central reason. It signals to our industry, our partners, and our people that we recognise the need for emissions reductions with a direct impact. More importantly, we embrace the work of the upcoming reduction initiatives that lie ahead.

While our SBTi commitment makes our intention official, action is still ahead of us. LEMAN will need to develop and submit emissions reduction targets for validation, using our historical emissions data and baseline.

In the next 24 months, we will focus on identifying our decarbonisation levers, quantifying LEMAN’s targets and shaping our roadmap. In the same vein as her latest commentary, Sandhya Menon, Group Sustainability Advisor, emphasizes:

At LEMAN, we are firm on doing sustainability the right way—not the rushed way. The work ahead will take dedication and collaboration, and with this commitment, we are stepping into it with clarity and purpose

What is next for LEMAN’s SBTi journey

An SBTi commitment means that LEMAN must develop and submit emissions reduction targets for validation to SBTi. This commitment is a development coming with tailwind from LEMAN’s 2024 sustainability report and last year’s concerted work with our ESG data infrastructure.

It is now time to put our foundational work to use and set LEMAN’s North Star for sustainable action. We are looking forward to sharing our progress and updates as we move through the validation process and into implementation.
