From Scandinavia to China: A Global Journey with LEMAN

Mie Carlsen in LEMAN China - a global perspective on logistics

Our roots may be Danish, but our presence spans the globe. Coupled with our commitment to putting people first, this global reach allows us to offer unique opportunities for personal and professional growth across borders and cultures.

The chance to work in and experience a different culture is a big perk for many people at LEMAN – one of them being Danish freight forwarder, Mie Carlsen.

After 3 years as a freight forwarder and working in various departments across Scandinavia, Mie seized a career-defining opportunity to take her skills global — stepping into the fast-paced world of logistics in China. With a new role as APAC Business Process Partner, Mie made the move to Shanghai to lead the digital transformation of LEMAN Asia.

After just a few months in her new position, Mie has gained fresh perspectives on logistics in China and insights into what sets LEMAN China apart from others in the industry.

What is different about logistics in China and how does it manifest in LEMAN?

Freight forwarding in China is hectic – for clients and freight forwarders alike! It is a very fast, competitive domain with the same core service. In that context, the question of ‘what’s the difference’ becomes a central question, and the answer is often transparency – what’s going on behind the scenes.

What makes LEMAN China different from other freight forwarders?

It’s the transparency that makes LEMAN China different. The team here has a unique view of service, which includes communicating transparently with clients instead of leaving out all the risks. This comes from a high level of trust, both among the LEMAN China team and between the team and clients.

What is the team like and how do they operate?

LEMAN China has a high retention rate. For the clients, it means they can develop lasting relationships with LEMAN, with high trust and consistency. For the team, it means they know each other really well and have formed a tight dynamic.

What cultural dynamics have you noted with LEMAN being a Danish company and the team being Chinese, and how are they expressed?

The people at LEMAN China have work-life balance, feel confident, and since we know each other well, no one hesitates to challenge or speak up. That’s what enables transparency across the board.

What is the warehouse like and how does the team work?

I love visiting the warehouse in China. We go frequently to ensure the goods are treated well – even though it’s not really necessary. We have a strong relationship with the warehouse and there’s high trust from both sides, which nurtures a rapid and free flow of information.

How are the LEMAN values expressed in the Chinese branch?

The LEMAN China team embodies the LEMAN values. Commitment is grounded in the culture: our people are so productive, they are invested in the relationships with the customers, and they do it with pride. The team has the warmest respect for each other. We are fully aware of each other’s boundaries and expertise, and respect for both is what drives our seamless collaboration. Finally, the size of the team, as well as our collaborative style, is what fosters the highest quality of service. It is balanced perfectly to provide quality treatment to every client.
