Understanding Insetting:
Direct, Indirect, and Book & Claim Approaches
Carbon insetting involves funding emission reduction projects within a specific industry. For example, purchasing sustainable marine biofuel for ocean shipments reduces overall emissions, even if the buyer’s shipment did not directly use that biofuel. This approach supports cleaner practices across the industry and helps lower carbon footprints.
Direct Insetting
Direct insetting involves funding carbon reduction initiatives in a company’s own fleet or operations. For example, a logistics provider might invest in converting its fleet to electric vehicles or biofuel-powered trucks.
Indirect Insetting
Indirect insetting supports emission-reduction efforts outside a company’s direct operations but still within its supply chain or industry. This might include funding the production of sustainable fuels for third-party carriers.
Book & Claim
This is a flexible type of indirect insetting. In the book-and-claim model, LEMAN funds sustainable practices—such as producing biofuels—even if the specific fuel is not used directly in your shipment. By “booking” the environmental benefit and “claiming” it through verified certificates, we ensure scalability and transparency in reducing industry emissions.
